The Market Potential For Managers In Power Companies

Power sector touches the lives of people living across the globe, and, thus, it becomes extremely important for this line of work to be handled by qualified managers who can take in the right direction. Even though ‘right direction’ is an ambiguous term, the potential of this field is not. Engineers stand an extremely good chance of making a fruitful career in the power management industry after gaining requisite skills and knowledge from reputed institutes of India. In India, the salary packages of freshers run into lacs per month, and for experienced individuals, there is no limit whatsoever.

In India, National Power Training Institute and University of Petroleum and Energy Studies are two of the leading institutes that conduct worthwhile courses in power management. Students who take national level management tests like CAT, MAT, and GMAT are eligible, though separate tests are also taken by the colleges. Depending upon test scores, the students are called for group discussions which are followed by interviews. The emphasis of power management programs is on running the power sector along commercial lines by equipping the students with the desired technical and managerial skills.

Online CAT 2010 goes smoothly, till now

As the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) commenced the Common Admission Test (CAT 2010) last week, there was a lot of apprehension surrounding it. Severely perturbed by the debacle that CAT 2009 was, students, parents, coaching centers and, most importantly, the IIM authorities waited with abated breathe to see how the process went. Well the answer turns out to be – surprisingly well. The much awaited exam has gone smoothly till now, but a long time remains before the final verdict can be handed over to IIMs.

Last year, technical glitches, no images, improbable answer-options and server crashes were common terms associated with CAT 2009. This examination is the entrance ticket to the gateway to India’s premier management institutes, but was marred with problems due to the inexperience of IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore in conducting computer based tests (CBTs). Last year, the exam was held over a period of 10 days, in which it faced severe criticism and ridicule from all quarters. Due to viruses and many other problems, the exam of more than 11,000 students had to be taken again on January 30th & 31st by Prometric, the U.S. based firm that was given the contract of conducting the examination on behalf of IIMs.

This year, the IIMs (Lucknow & Calcutta) have decided to honour their contract with Prometric, which has handed over the responsibility to Indian giant NIIT for the same. The window for carrying out the exam has been extended from 10 to 20 days this time and CAT 2010 will be held in two shifts over the 20 day period – morning and afternoon, just like last year. All examination centers were awarded a period of 15 days to ensure that all their systems were in place and functioning as per standards.

The MBA Scenario: Are Colleges Adopting Correct Methodology?

It has long been known that MBA colleges equip the students with the most comprehensive knowledge regarding the fields of specialization they choose. Traditionally, the business management colleges used to groom all students under the same syllabi for one year, and then offer specialized courses in the second. But nowadays, several MBA colleges offer students specialization in the fields they choose prior their joining the institute. Though the top business management institutes still follow the traditional method, private and newer colleges, which have been set up less than 20 years ago, follow the more recent trend.

Of course, every one knows that focus is a prerequisite for any individual, more so for one with managerial ambitions. But many a times, people see a profession and find themselves suitable; they do not explore their capabilities in other professional streams. This can be proven by the stupendous number of students who pursue business management after completing graduation in, say, engineering, science or mathematics. In similar fashion, a student who chooses marketing as his field of specialization might find his capabilities better suited for finance.

So, are the newer MBA colleges correct in adopting the methodologies of fixing the streams of expertise upon the students’ arrival, without letting them check their potential in other professions that may intrigue him/her?
